Nutrition

Equine nutrition involves crafting balanced diets tailored to a horse’s age, breed, activity level, and health to ensure optimal performance, health, and longevity. As non-ruminant herbivores, horses need at least 1.5-2% of their body weight in forages (hay, grass) daily, supplemented with grains and vitamins/minerals as needed. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, colic, or laminitis. Key considerations include:

  • Digestive Health: A small stomach and hindgut fermentation demand high-fiber diets to avoid ulcers or choke.

  • Nutrient Balance: Energy, protein, minerals (e.g., calcium, phosphorus), and vitamins (e.g., vitamin E) must be balanced, with organic minerals aiding absorption.

  • Specialized Diets: Nutritionists design rations for performance horses, seniors, foals, or conditions like equine metabolic syndrome or laminitis, often using low-NSC feeds.

  • Feed Management: Forage quality varies; soaking hay lowers NSCs. Feed is weighed for precision, and cold weather increases energy needs.

  • Research: The 2007 NRC guidelines and ration software inform diets, with ongoing studies on prebiotics and minerals refining practices.

Equine nutritionists, typically with advanced degrees (BSc, MSc, PhD) and credentials (RNutr, ARPAS), collaborate with vets and owners to optimize diets and prevent nutrition-related issues. Use this directory to find qualified equine nutrition professionals who can assess your horse’s needs, evaluate forage, and create customized feeding plans to keep your horse thriving.
